The quintessential muscle car now has excellent all-weather capability, thanks to the new availability an all-wheel drive trim, says Automobile in a new report. The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT, as the new trim is known, came about as the result of research done by Dodge that showed that car buyers in northern parts of the country who favored the Challenger were opting for the four-door Charger because of all-wheel drive. Hence, the Challenger GT was born.
The Challenger GT is powered by the model line's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque; it's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Automobile estimates the 0-60 mph time in the high 5.0-seconds range. Purists will be somewhat reassured to learn that power is still fed primarily to the rear wheels. Innovative sensing technology routes power to the front wheels when the car detects slip, the air temperature drops below a certain threshold, the windshield wipers are activated or the car goes into manual-shift mode.
Inside the cabin, the GT features leather seats and a heated steering wheel. The available GT Interior package upgrades the seating to Nappa leather and suede performance seats, along with a premium Alpine sound system and sport steering wheel. Prices for the Challenger GT start at $34,490, a premium over the standard Challenger but pretty reasonable given all that you get, notes Automobile.
